Block Captains

( Click here for map with property addresses and Block Captains marked - Updated 10-16-08). 4.82MB )

We are still developing our Block Captains list and are dividing up the houses within the neighborhoods among us. If you would like to serve in this capacity, please email Robert Pettett with your address and phone number. We especially need Block Captains for Guilford Court and Hampton Trail where we don't have any Block Captains signed up. Also we need a Block Captain for southern intersection of Shady Drive and Huntington going toward Burns Road. The more neighbors we have involved in this task the easier it will be for everyone and the better job we can all do in protecting our community from crime.

Here are the current neighbors (updated 06-29-09) who have agreed to serve as Block Captains. Please thank them for their service to our community.

Lighting Issues

Below is map reflecting how those who filled out the C.O.P.S survey felt about adequate lighting in our neighborhood.

With the fact that there were 4 cars stolen and 4 home break ins in 2007, I am guessing lighting may have played a factor. Please let me share a brief story with you regarding this issue. A few months ago, around 3:00 AM, my wife and I both heard the distinct "thud" of a car skidding and the striking something nearby. I got up and looked outside but didn't see any vehicles. I retrieved my drivers license and got in our car to drive to go see if someone needed help. It turned out that the car must have been able to drive away, because I never did find it. But, here is the point of the story. As I drove through most of our neighborhood streets looking for the car that we had heard, I realized how dark many houses are a night. Many houses had no lights on outside at all. And, with a number of us parking our cars outdoors, I saw that these could be easy targets for potential thieves.

Huntington, Beaver Lodge, & Burnside Subdivisions, Lilburn, GA - Cooper Lighting MS35 Security LightsIt is my understanding from someone in zoning that Jackson EMC will not come back into a neighborhood and retrofit it with more streetlights. So we have to take the responsibility ourselves. It is a good idea just to leave a porch and/or patio light on where your home would be dark. For our own home, we went to Lowe's and bought two motion sensor flood lights and just replaced two of the fixtures that we already had. The fixtures were around $13 each. If you don't leave lights on outside, especially if you park your cars outdoors, I would encourage you to either install some motion sensor lights at your home, or have a licensed and insured electrician do it for you.

Thank you,
Robert Pettett
