November 22, 2008 - Free Bike Festival
A free Bike Festival and Fun Ride is scheduled on Saturday, November at 2:00 pm for bikers of all ages and skill levels. This event is for neighbors living in Huntington, Beaver Lodge, & Burnside subdivisions and their guests.
We will meet in the parking lot of the Huntington Recreational Club (click here for directions). We plan to start with the BMX bike exhibition (see below). And then we will have both of the team riders tell about their teams and also also Communicycle will provide some instruction on bike repair. Following this we will hold a Fun Ride through the neighborhood.
All riders under the age of 16 must wear a bike helmet to participate in the fun ride. Not only is it for your child’s safety, it is Georgia Law.
The invited groups for this Bike Festival:
http://www.gtcbike.org: The Gwinnett Touring Club (GTC) was formed circa 1982 has over 100 members, several of those with State and National championship titles. Most of the riders simply enjoy the quiet roads in the Gwinnett-Walton-Barrow-Jackson County area.
http://www.fultonflyerscycling.org: Fulton Flyers Cycling is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) corporation dedicated to fostering the athletic development of young cyclists, and provides financial support for those riders to attend national and international competitions. Since 1997, the FFCC has been a driving force cycling development.
http://www.communicycle.us: The founders of Communicycle live in Gwinnett and will come and share about their love for biking and show us how to do some basic bike repairs.
http://www.biketrials.com: We have secured a BMX rider from Duluth to come and do an exhibition show. This rider is 18th in the world for the Junior BMX Bike Trials competition.
Even if we aren’t able to conduct the BMX exhibition at this time, we will still host the other three groups and the fun ride. Please sign up at the bottom of this page.
If you have a child's helmet that you are no longer using, we would be glad to take it
and put it to good use for some of the children in our neighborhood. |

Zoning
Here is an update as of 10/23/08 from Janet Tobin about the SUP-08-062 request for a special use permit to open a billiards hall on Pleasant Hill Road near the Little Caesar's.
"Thank you to everyone who came out to the Planning Commission meeting last night regarding the request to open a pool hall on Pleasant Hill Road. I'm happy to inform you that due, in large part, to your letters, emails and calls in opposition, the applicants chose to withdraw their request for a billiards hall at 550 Pleasant Hill Road and it has been dismissed. The other major reason for the withdrawal was our request that if the pool hall was approved, that they not be allowed to have a permit to serve alcohol at the facility. The owner's did not think it would be feasible to open a billiards hall without the ability to serve alcohol and they did not want to install a kitchen as required by the county alcohol permit regulations.
They do have the right to renew their request for the special use permit within the next year without having to re-file, so we will monitor this, but it's my opinion after speaking with the owner's son yesterday, that they are going back to the drawing board with regard to what type of business to put in there. Thank you for your responses and your willingness to get involved in your community. I have to add that the owners' of the shopping center are extremely nice people who were willing to listen to our concerns. They are very interested in what types of businesses would due well in our community. If you would like to make suggestions, they would love to hear from you. They are thinking of opening a coffee shop and I suggested to them that an ice cream parlor and/or donut shop might also be successful. Please let me know if you would like to contact them and I'll be happy to forward the email address to you. Thanks, Janet Tobin"

Zoning and Development:
Approved on June 23, 2009 by the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners:
2009-0734 Award RP018-08, public private partnership to pre-develop the Ronald Reagan Pkwy extension, Department of Transportation, to sole bidder, Skanska USA Civil Southeast, Inc., amount not to exceed $1,461,518.00. Authorization for Chairman to execute contracts subject to approval by the Law Department. Contracts to follow award.
Panel B's Gwinnett County 2009 Grand Jury results regarding the extension to Ronald Reagan Parkway:
(See article from GwinnettDailyPost.com)
"That body, in separate presentments, looked into a deal to study an extension to Ronald Reagan Parkway.
While the group said it found no evidence of a conflict of interest between the law office of Nasuti and Skanska USA, the company receiving the contract, the grand jury concluded the extension is unnecessary and $1.4 million is an 'excessive amount' to spend on the study.
Several jurors live and drive in this area and feel there is no need for this extension and no need for a toll road in this area," the presentments said."

Annexation - Lilburn City Proposal
Annexation Hearing Meeting - Thursday, February 19 at 7 PM)
Location: Parkview High School
The City of Lilburn announces our intent to annex approximately eight (8) square miles of predominantly residential property for a new total of 14.5 square miles within the City limits. The City has requested that legislation be introduced in the current session of the Georgia General Assembly. The decision to annex stems from requests from residents in the area, the City’s need for consistent boundaries, broadening of the City’s tax base to reduce the need for future tax increases and the City’s desire to protect property values in the community beyond the current City limits.
The legislation for annexation will be introduced to the Georgia General Assembly by the end of February with a public information meeting to be held prior to the introduction. Further details regarding the public information meeting, including the date and location, are to be determined. The effective date of the annexation will be December 1, 2009.
New residents will receive the quality amenities and services that our current residents enjoy. These benefits include: increased police protection, enhanced public services such as Code Enforcement and Public Works, direct access to elected officials and staff, careful community planning and sanitation that is currently provided at no charge to residents.
Mayor Diana Preston states, “We are thrilled to welcome new residents and businesses to our City and we look forward to providing them with the high level of service that our current residents and businesses enjoy. The community of Lilburn has always extended beyond the present City limits, so we are excited to open our doors to the surrounding neighborhoods.”
